SAVORY news for the week of March 31, 2024
An upscale spot opens while a favorite closes, a chef leaves a popular venue—and there are Malort cocktails (for better or worse)
I’m sending this a little early. I hope you all have a great Easter weekend!

—Pop life: Don’t forget my other Substack: “Pop-Eds: My takes on pop culture.” Thank you so much to the people who’ve already subscribed. Among other things and people, my latest entry discusses a controversial race, bad local ads, Diddy and a rare misstep by Kelly Clarkson. Subscribe to andrew449.Substack.com to get all my thoughts.
—Non-culinary item: 360 Chicago—the observation deck atop the 94th of the former Hancock Building at 875 N. Michigan Ave.—is hosting a viewing event for the solar eclipse taking place April 8.
Guests can witness the solar spectacle with unobstructed views from the observation deck’s floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic, 360-degree views 1,030 ft. above the Chicago skyline. The eclipse will begin around 12:51 p.m. and end around 3:22 p.m.
Tickets are available on the website at 360chicago.com/tickets.
And now on to culinary items…
—Chop chef: I won’t be competing on any of those culinary competition shows anytime soon, but I witnessed a small miracle: myself cooking.
I received a (complimentary) seven-finger-high pork chop from Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille, which is opening a new location in Vernon Hills on April 15. (There are restaurants in Oak Brook and Schaumburg, though.) I wasn’t sure how things would go, since I rarely cook. (When people ask if I make anything, I respond, “Yeah—reservations.”) However, I let it thaw for a day longer than the instructions called for and actually microwaved the chop instead of using an oven. It turned out to be absolutely delicious (and a friend agreed).
So if I can make a pork chop taste top-notch, imagine what the wizards at Perry’s can do.
—Market value: Green City Market will open its two outdoor farmers markets one month ahead of schedule, per Block Club Chicago.
The Lincoln Park location will reopen April 6, running 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 23 at the park, 1817 N. Clark St. The market will also run Wednesdays on May 1-Oct. 30.
The West Loop market will reopen May 4, running 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 23 at 115 S. Sangamon St.
Thankfully, one thing that won’t change is the market’s policy of triple-matching Link (also known as SNAP or EBT), up to $25.
